Neglect is sometimes the cause of children being removed from the home. In those cases, Mrs. Bowen said, it is not so much that the parents do anything terrible to the children, but that they do nothing at all.
She has seen children with matted, filthy hair, their faces caked with mucous which no one wiped away. In such cases, often the children do not receive proper nutrition. Sometimes, they don’t attend school regularly.
“That is real sad, when you think how rich this country is. And then you look at their sad faces.” But Mrs. Bowen has also seen the miraculous change in those children when they are placed in a home with caring foster parents who see to their needs.
She told of visiting one foster home several days after children were placed there, and of not recognizing one of the youngsters. “It’s an amazing difference. With food, some rest, their basic needs, they bloom like little flowers.”
