So, the politicos suggest, let’s change the law. Every convicted drug offender gets an automatic 10 years in prison for his crime. First off, that 15year-old kid knows that that will happen only if he gets caught — and in his mind, only chumps get caught. Meanwhile, he’s raking in the cash.
To expect him to quit making what, to him, is easy money by holding an ethereal threat of prison over his head is unrealistic. The suggestion of mandatory sentencing, moreover, assumes that there is adequate prison space to incarcerate convicted felons for extended periods of time — an assumption which is completely at odds with the present situation. Where will all the tdx money to construct new' prisons come from?
Target the users, the politicians suggest. Most have plenty of money — they can pay the thousands of dollars in mandatory fines proposed by some.
