The Board of Supervisors Monday adopted a motion saying, “The board looks favorably on the Feb. l(f letter from the School Board.” The vote was 4 to 1 with Piedmont District representative Charles K. (Pete) Estes voting “no.”
In the letter the School Board had asked the supervisors for approval to proceed with a $1.3 million addition to the elementary school. The letter asked the supervisors to support hiring an architect this summer with the goal of awarding a contract this fall and having the addition completed in time for the 1994-95 school year.
The letter also asked the supervisors to use the Virginia Public School Authority to buy bonds. This mechanism does not require a referrendum. It also asked the supervisors to consider purchasing adjacent land immediately, and to consider expansion at the high school later.
School Superintendent David Gangel said the School Board needed immediate guidance on whether to proceed with the addition in preparing the budget for the coming year. He said the addition would serve the primary grades, kindergarten, first and second.
Stonewall-Hawthom District representative Robert Anderson asked whether the current sewage system would serve the addition.
Dr. Gangel said no upgrade in the sewer system was included in the cost estimate. He said the system is due for relicensing this year, and that a consultant had advised that changes would be needed for relicensing.
