The irst name is the genus and the sec>nd the species, e.g. Hedra helix English Ivy). The genus is capitalzed while the species generally is lot. When the species name is delved from a personal name, is may ie capitalized.
Sometimes a third name is included. If italicized, it is a subspecies >r botanical variety, e.g. PhilodenIron scandens oxycardium. If in single quotes or preceded by the ibbreviation cv. or var., it is a lamed cultivar or variety, e.g. Dracaena deremensis “Janet Craig.”
Hybrids Name Include X
The names of hybrid plants are ^receded by a multiplication sign X), as in the hybrid genus X Catshedera or the hybrid species Coleus X hybridus. All botanical lames are governed by intemationilly accepted rules found in the Inemational Code of Nomenclature of Cultivated Plants.
While the origin of common lames is interesting and often ooted in mythology, it is the botancal names that ensure the accurate dentification of plants. The gardenng public is becoming more sophisticated and seeking out new species ind varieties. Commercial producers now frequently list the botanical lames of plants they offer.
