Burning trash in an uncovered barrel is dangerous, because the fire can spread so easily.

Always clear out a safe area around the barrel, place it on cinderblocks or some type of nonflammable support to keep it off the ground. It should be covered with a lid or wire screen to keep burning embers from blowing out.

Always stay with the fire until it is dead out. Also, it would be a good idea to have a water hose Or a couple of buckets of water within reach.

Remember, even though you wait until 4 p.m. to light the fire and take all possible precautions, you are still responsible and liable for it if it should escape. There are other fire laws in effect all year that need to be observed.

For the next few months, wildfires will spread very rapidly. They can damage and destroy homes, property, and acres of valuable timber and wildlife habitat, not to mention jeopardize the lives of firefighters.
