A slide presentation on trout streams in the nearby George Washington National Forest will be offered by Mark Hudy, a forest fisheries biologist, at the next meeting of the Northern Virginia Chapter of Trout Unlimited Thursday, March 4.
The chapter’s monthly meetings are open to the public, and there is no admission charge.
Mr. Hudy will focus on Fridley Run, a stream in the Lee Ranger District whose native trout population has disappeared. The suspected culprit is acid rain, and Mr. Hudy has developed a plan to apply limestone to the riparian zone in an attempt to neutralize the hyperacidity.
If it worked, it could provide a temporary “band aid” solution to permit an attempted resrotation of trout.
