Included in the budget are 3 percent salary increases plus step increases for teachers, teachers’ aides, and administrators. In the case of teachers this added nearly $120,000 to the budget. For aides the increase was $5,600 and for administrators it amounted to an additional $11,400.
Other employees, such as bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, and secretaries are scheduled to receive 4 percent raises. Dr. Gangel said that this was justified because state workers received a 2 percent increase in January and another 2 percent is scheduled for this July. He said that he had heard that some state employees might be getting as much as 6.8 percent raises and left opep the possibility that he might increase the amount for these school employees. ..Because of the decrease in federal funds for Chapter 1, two of the five remedial teaching positions in this program were cut from the budget.
There are a few positions added to the budget, but, except for a parttime aide to assist the high school librarian, they aren’t really new. Because of increased enrollment an extpa kindergarten teacher was hired at the beginning of the year. A sign language interpreter was hired to serve a deaf pre-school child. An additional bus driver was hired to provide transportation for a handicapped student. The hours of a parttime art teacher are doubled for next year. All of these additional positions are being funded out of the current budget even though they were not anticipated when the budget was passed.
,An additional $24,700 was added to ..the budget to pay for improvements to the sewage systems at both schools. The sewer systems at both schools are scheduled to be relicensed this year. Dr. Gangel said he, had been advised to include $7,000 in the budget for the high school system and $17,700 for the elementary school to meet new licensingrequirements.
$11,500 was added to subsidize the cost of textbooks. Dr. Gangel said that without these funds, rental for most textbooks at the high school would have to increase from $8.10 to $14.45.
Dr. Gangel noted that almost all of the increased costs in the budget are the result of “mandates. There is not a lot of innovation in the budget,” he said.
