“Yes, they cost a little more initially,” he said, “but it’s lots less expensive to replace a single pane rather than the whole window." Mrs. Simmons also sought approval for stairs to the small log cabin so that the front door can be used again. The building sits right up against the edge of the sidewalk and the steps will intrude substantially upon the walk.
The steps approved by the ARB will run with the sidewalk rather than intrude across it so that pedestrians will be able to walk up the steps, across the landing and down the other side without being forced into the street.
The steps will be 30 inches wide and will extend across most of the sidewalk.
After approving Mrs. Simmons’ applications, the ARB turned its attention to the latest set of house plans offered by Bob Etchells.
He is slowly building a house on Piedmont Street extended that, when finished, will look like an old log cabin with a more modern addition.
The ARB previously had approved Mr. Etchells’ house plans. He was before the board this time to discuss proposedchanges to his original drawings.
Specifically he wished to eliminate a relatively elaborate cornice treatment and expose the rafter ends instead. He also said he wished to put on a copper roof, add a window to one wall of the basement, and change the size and shape of the front porch so that it extended the length of the building.
Commenting on the house plans, Mr. Barton wondered if the many different building styles represented on the house might not make it difficult to sell.
Mr. Etchells said he was building it for himself. “I just wanted to do something a little bit different,” he said.
"His latest plans show one window replaced by a set of French doors that will open onto the extended porch.
The ARB members approved all of his proposed changes but made it clear that they have not yet seen and passed on the acutal windows nor on the doors themselves.
