said that several other small grant programs may enable the school sys- , tern to keep a third full-time employee, who has been employed under the “at risk” grant.
The $10,500 cut in federal funds, chiefly in Chapter 1 funding, will mean cutting one teacher, but Dr. Gangel said that the budget would allow the school system to employ two more aides for the remedial program.
The draft budget calls for an additional $116,000 for salary increases. This will mean an increase of 3 percent for administrators, bus drivers, secretaries, custodians and cafeteria workers, Dr. Gangel said. For teachers and teacher aides, who have salary schedules, each step will be increased 1 percent, and employees will get whatever additional step increase their position on the scale calls for. For some teachers this will mean only a 1 percent increase. For others it will be up to 4 or 5 percent.
The additional cost of debt .service resulting from the elementary school addition will be nearly $68,200. Free textbooks will add about $37,200 to the budget. Dr. Gangel said that number will be much higher next year, when new books are adopted.
The budget also includes $34,500 for improvements to the high school septic system.
