The figures used for the employed come from a survey of employers. William F. Mezger, a statistician for the VEC said that the monthly survey of employers targets the larger ones who employ about one million of the 2.9 million employed in the state. He said 60 percent of the manufacturing employers and 25 to 30 percent of the service and trade employers are surveyed.
Once a year, figures from this survey are benchmarked against a survey of all 135,000 employers in the state, he said.
He said that employment figures are collected by the place of work and “converted” to give the place of residence. “The smaller the area, the more the numbers are going to vary,” he said.
Mr. Mezger said that many Rappahannock workers are employed in the construction industry, and that accounts for the seasonal variation. The summer also includes students working full time.
