Sheriff John Henry Woodward said people have reported receiving telephone calls in which someone claiming to be a Rappahannock Sheriffs Department deputy asks if he can charge them with a long-distance call.
Sheriff Woodward said none of his deputies are making these calls, and citizens should not agree to accept the charges.
He said he has heard of people receiving these calls in Washington and Sperryville, and more recently in Frederick County.
He said if anyone did receive such a call and agree to accept the charges, he should bring his telephone bill to the sheriffs department where an attempt can be made to trace the call. So far no such charges have shown up on phone bills that he has seen, he said.
