The Eastern Bluebird (Sialia SC alia) has a lot of friends in Virginia but it could use a lot more. *
The bluebird, a traditional syni bol of happiness, was once conunoa . in rural areas throughout the Confi monwealth. The population decline is mainly due to shortage of natural cavities for nesting, competition from house sparrows and starlings and pesticides. These beautiful song birds are making a comeback as pe<f pie put up nesting boxes for thenf As a result, many older folks are seeing their first bluebird in years and younger people are discovering the for the first time.
More and more single pairs erf bluebirds are now nesting in boxes in yards, where people have a front row seat for watching these beautfe fill birds. If you have a large opeQ area, a trail of boxes will do well. ■
