Teacher Carol Johnson has been teaching kindergarten at RCES for the past eight years. “This is much different than the way I was teaching five years ago. We have to please both ends of the spectrum. Not all parents believe this is the way to learn. We will have to go through this year and see at the end of the year how the childrens’ progress has gone,” she said.
“The teacher’s job is not to sit down and structure. It is my job to facilitate to learn these skills. I watch them to see what they are ready for,” said Mrs. Johnson.
In Geraldine Payne’s class, the children vote for what they wish to do, such as going outside for recess or staying in to work at centers. “They love it,” she said. The children select which center they wish to work at, and end up visiting 13 different centers over the week.
Mrs. Payne’s students have also been studying some sign language, as she has had some training in it. “We praise the children a lot. We give lots of hugs,” she said.
In Sherri Marquand’s class, her centers are called “work areas”, and when they go outside, that is designated as “play.” She calls the centers an old way of teaching that has come back. “The kids can really learn a lot through play,” she said.
In Mrs. Marquand’s classroom are many lunchboxes filled with items which can be used for counting and discovering shapes and sizes. Some are filled with keys, rocks, nuts and bolts, and shells.
