Kindergarteners at Rappahannock County Elementary School have fun and learn at the same time.
The children spend much of their school day in “centers,” separate areas of the classroom which provide different opportunities for learning.
The five kindergarten classes at RCES all have centers at which the students may learn colors, letters, counting, hand and eye coordination, social skills, sharing, shapes, computer skills, and more. It is up to the individual teachers how much time the children spend at centers, but they all spend at least one hour a day. The children are encouraged to pick whichever center they want to spend time at, but if they constantly pick the same one, the teacher will try to gear them toward another center.
Each classroom has a housekeeping center, with miniature kitchen appliances, a washer and dryer, telephones, a cash register, and sink. It is one of the most popular areas. Children learn social skills there and how to share with others. They learn how to call 911, their grandmother, or Pizza Hut to order dinner.
