Employment and unemployment statistics for the past two years in Rappahannock show that the county’s work force is shrinking and that it is quite seasonal.
Employment is lowest in the winter months and highest in the summer. In 1993 there were 349 more people employed in June than there were in January. However, by December the numbers were down again, 343 below the June employment number.
The second trend shown by the data, however, is that Rappahannock’s work force was sharply reduced when 1993 is compared to 1992.
While unemployment dropped dramatically between 1992 and 1993, the numbers of people employed also dropped, perhaps even more dramatically.
When the monthly numbers are averaged for the year, there were 250 fewer people employed in 1993 than in 1992, and 177 fewer unemployed, for a reduction in the work force of427.
