Mrs. Tupper calls the measuring “a concrete way of teaching something abstract”. The children can learn that two different shapes of containers can actually hold the same amount.
The Virginia state guidelines and early childhood education emphasize “DAP”, developmental^ appropriate practice. Using this curriculum, students are taught and learn at their own pace, because they have individual developmental levels. They grow and develop at different levels. This method is used at RCES. “All the prerequisites have to fall into place before they are ready to do the next step. We provide the foundations and framework. What we expect from the kids has stayed the same. We have just changed the method of getting them there,” said Mrs. Tupper.
