Some of the difference may be due to people moving out of the county. Some is no doubt due to workers who have used up their eligibility for unemployment compensation. Many may have given up looking for jobs. Some have retired.
Janice Moffett, who keeps records on food stamp recipients for the Department of Social Services in the county, said that her figures for 1993 showed that many traditional patterns did not hold up for the year.
•Usually, she said, she has more applicants for food stamps during the winter months, however in 1993 she had an unusual number of applicants April and September, and there were fewer clients on food stamps in December than there had been in June.
She said she did not see the usual number of construction workers applying in late fall, as they continued to have work. However, the difficult weather this winter has increased the load as more people who do have jobs have not* been able to get to work and have lost wages.
