In case you haven’t heard, Smojkey Bear celebrates his 50th birthday in 1994. ' Few people realize that Smokey’s career in forest fire prevention started out on the drawing board. During World War II, forest prod,u<Jt8 to support the war effort were “ih great demand. Many feared that the enemy might be able to destroy die forest by wildfire. The U.S. For-est Services started the Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention Program in ,1942. The War Advertising Council ‘vims aksed to help with the program, hi August, 1944, a bear was introduced as the campaign symbol.
