Rappahannock Ncw«8teff Writer ' • The Town Council met with some opposition to its decision to rent out ttie Town Hall for public events. / At the January Town Council meeting, the council granted approval to RAAC to have a coffeehouse In the Town Hall on Feb. 12.
Council member Brad Fisher brought in a draft application for people to rent the Town Hall, and passed out copies to other council members and interested parties in the audience.
Diane Bruce, a resident of the (own of Washington, spoke against the idea of renting out the Town Hall for public use. She said, “I have been opposed to the public use of the building since you started using it. I thought the deed language was that this would not be used for public use. I would like to oppose such a broad use policy by the use of the building”.
Ms. Bruce continued, “When there is parking on both sides of the street it is difficult to drive down the street. If people use it, they should have a place to park. If there are more than six or seven cars it is a headache.”
Council member Ray Gooch said, “I was on council during discussion of the deed restrictions. Mr. Wickens’ suggestion was that the building be used only for town meetings. I objected to having the building used , only one night a month. We have a scarce lack of space in this county. I ’ think Trapezoid and Ki Theatre stayed here because they were able to use the other town hall. They have made a substantial contribution ip this county and town. I have been an. advocate that this building should be used”.
Mr. Gooch added, “I do not think jt would be detrimental to the character of this neighborhood. The town is the host for these functions. Outaide groups are limited in their use of the old town hall. We desperately need this building. ”
