and no immediate need for additional office space. He said the county is looking at altering the former Methodist Church which it acquired from the town for office space, but has no immediate plans to do so,
Mr. McCarthy said the former church might become an office for the Extension Service if trends to cut Extension continue. The county is renting space for Extension offices from Peter Kramer, but if cuts reduce the number of agents assigned to Rappahannock County the county would not need as much space.
Mayor Willis and Mr. Gooch asked what the attitude of the county would be to the town expanding its boundaries. Mr. Massie and Dr. Krebser said the county would be concerned about increased demand for schools with a large development.
Mayor Willis asked if the county would consider approving a sewer line from Washington to Sperryville for town sewage.
Mr. McCarthy said courts have ruled when a sewer line is extended, any property owner along that line could tap into it.
“There would be no way to stop growth if you did that,” Dr. Krebser said. Mr. McCarty encouraged the town to consider alternative sewage disposal such as artificial wetlands.
Ms. van Dort asked about the “embryo industrial corridor” on U.S. 211. She said she was concerned it would eventually mean Washington and Sperryville were connected by a commercial strip.
Mr. Massie said the planned General Commercial District extends from the former toll house to the Faith Mountain building and the county does not intend to let it extend to Sperryville. He said the county plans to have it expand back from the highway, not along it.
