Americans celebrated two important landmarks in August — the 75th anniversary of women’s right to vote and passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

By commemorating these achievements, we recognize that the continuing effort to abolish voting barriers moves our nation closer to the Jeffersonian ideal of a government by the people.

In Jefferson’s Virginia, unfortunately, expanded access to voting rights is being blocked by Governor Allen and Attorney General Gilmore, who are wasting our tax dollars on a legal challenge to the National Voter Registration Act, or so-called “motor voter” law.

So far, the courts have made short work of motor voter disputes stemming from states’ rights arguments. California, Illinois and Pennsylvania have all lost their initial challenges to the law. California’s appeal was recently rejected. In a unanimous decision, the conservative 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that motor voter is within Congress’
