fruits and vegetables are almost 95% water and meats and cheeses are about 50% water. So, if a well-balanced diet is being eaten there is an additional needs for 6-8 glasses of liquids daily. Plain water is the liquid of choice, but juices, milk and soups are sufficient to make-up the water balance.
Caffeine-containing sodas and coffee, and alcohol, are not beverages of choice because they actually cause more frequent urination and fluid loss. Caffeine has a diuretic effect on the body and may cause dehydration.
Two Kinds of Water
There are two kinds of water — hard waters and soft water.
Hard water contains large amounts of the two minerals calcium and magnesium. Often hard water leaves rings around bathtubs and sinks. Hard water also leaves rocklike crystals in teakettles and water pitchers.
Soft water contains a high concentration of sodium, and it appears more bubbly than hard water. Studies have found that consumption of large quantities of soft water may contribute to high blood pressure and heart disease.
