the true conservative element of his party, his state and this district,” he said. “We have an experienced and effective alternative in Sue Scheer, and we will work hard for her election.”
Mrs. Scheer hailed the group as “a Who’s Who of community leaders ... willing to put aside personal political philosophies because they are more concerned about a larger picture.”
The chairman of the Fauquier County Republican Committee, however, scoffed at the authenticity of those political philosophies. Dan Light believes that “Republicans for Scheer” is far from a defection of Del. Katzen’s base of support. He considers it a case of familiar political animals in the area again showing their faces: the professed Republicans who vote locally on the issues of growth and development.
“They say they’re Republicans ... but they’re all PEC, and that’s Sue Scheer’s only issue,” said Mr. Light, who could not recall ever seeing more than two of the members at any local Republican event. “I can call myself a house, but what does that do to the housing market? Nothing. They can call themselves Republicans, but what does that do to the Republican candidate? Nothing,” Mr. Light continued. “The PEC is trying to take over both parties ... but real Republicans are 100 percent behind Jay Katzen.”
