Rep. Wolf suggests the park develop more parking inside the park. There are various plans to do so most involving using some additional land now outside the park. The park lacks the authority and funds to purchase additional land or to develop a parking lot.
For years the Shenandoah National Park has asked for additional funds for operations and maintenance. Funds for operations have been increased slightly, but programs still lag behind those offered in earlier years, and maintenance projects have been put off year after year.
The relationship between Rep. Wolf and the park service is strained. Congressman Wolf claims credit for doubling the size of the Manassas National Battlefield Park. He is the chief sponsor of a bill to add a park made up of several sites in the Shenandoah Valley where Civil War battles were fought.
He has been disappointed to receive only lukewarm support for these projects from the park service, but these increased park service responsibilities will necessarily require more operating and maintenance expenses, and Congress has not been willing to approve sufficient funds.
Shenandoah National Park could probably be self supporting if it got to keep fees collected at the entrances to the Skyline Drive and fees from campgrounds. However such revenues are turned over to the federal government, which in turn appropriates operating and maintenance funds. : It hardly makes sense to continuously increase the jurisdiction of the national parks if Congress is not willing to increase their budgets.
