Brenda Hensley has recently opened her own shop, Brenda’s Family Hair Care Cabin, in the old toll house on U.S. 211 just west of Washington.
Before embarking on her own business, Ms. Hensley worked with Darlene Moore in the Beauty Box in Washington for six years. Prior to that she worked in Amissville for three years, and had her own shop in Warrenton. She said that she really enjoyed working with Mrs. Moore.
The toll house, which dates back to around 1850, has been home to many businesses in Rappahannock. Most recently, it was a gun shop owned by Lucky and Quentin McCoy. It has also housed antiques.
The shop is a very cozy space. The front room has two chairs with driers, an entertainment center complete with a television and cassette player with country music tapes, comfortable chairs for customers, and a desk for the appointment book. There are also plenty of magazines for reading. Ms. Hensley said that when the weather cools off, she plans to have a coffee machine and refreshments available for customers.
