recently filed a lawsuit against the United States Department of Justice to avoid compliance. They claim that motor voter is a federal infringement on states’ right and believe it will result in election fraud. Not only do the facts fail to support these arguments, but the fight against motor voter signals a willingness by the Allen administration to deny the overwhelming voice of Virginia citizens. What ever happened to trusting the people?
Governor Allen’s assertion that motor voter will cause election fraud doesn’t hold water. While increasing participation at the polls, allowing voter registration at state agencies (where identity checks are already stringent) will likely deter people from falsifying information. In a survey of 25 states that register voters by mail — as motor voter stipulates — state election officials reported that fraud was not a serious problem. The survey, conducted by Mississippi Secretary of State Dick Molpus, found that most election fraud occurred during balloting, not registration.
