“I have a hard time recalling that any of them had attended a Republican committee meeting,” he said Tuesday. “Charlie [Seilheimer] hasn’t been active in Republican campaigning.”
Del. Katzen said the defections came as no surprise. At the time of his vote in favor of a $163 million incentive package of road improvements for the Disney project, several of the members of “Republicans for Scheer” vowed'to vote against him.
But Del. Katzen quickly adds that he is heartened by the “conspicuous presence of those who have considered themselves Democrats” at some of his events.
“We prefer to consider them Virginians for Katzen,” he said.
Mr. McNear said he certainly considers himself a Republican. At the time the new 31st District was created following the 1990 census, Mr. McNear considered seeking the Republican nomination for the seat. He dropped out of the race, and Bob Darby won the party’s nomination.
Mr. McNear said he attended the Republican state convention last summer.
He does not agree that Del. Katzen’s support for the Disney project is the main reason this group is supporting Mrs. Scheer. “Disney is one thing. There are a lot of other things,” he said.
He said Del. Katzen seems to have “no concept” of controlling development and supports taking away local control in favor or control from Richmond. .
