Artist Tanya Richey likes to joke she has studio art galleries in the twin cities — Washington and Sperryville.
Her Windflower Gallery on Main Street in Washington was opened in the log cabin several years ago and closed when she moved to the Tanya Richey Studio in one section of the Mountainside Market building in Sperryville. Then she had a chance to move into the ice house in Washington and reopened the Windflower Gallery there.
She finds the differences between the customers she gets at the two businesses fascinating. Washington attracts customers who have come to the village as a destination. They may eat at The Inn, stay in a bed and breakfast and wander around the town to see what else is available. In Sperryville almost all of the customers are traveling through on their way to or from the Shenandoah National Park or Luray Caverns although some are locals attracted to the offerings at Mountainside Market.
This is not reflected in much difference in what sells in the two locations, and she has had customers go from one studio to the other to get something available at one but not the other, but usually there is not much overlap between tourists who visit Washington and those who visit in Sperryville.
