The sights and sounds of 1864 will come to life on a dramatic scale at the Wilderness Civil War Reenactment on May 18 and 19.
The event will be the largest reenactment on the east coast in 1996, with an estimated 5.000 reenactors, 150 cavalry and 30 artillery pieces descending on a spectacular, privately-owned farm in Orange County, Va. approximately 15 miles south of the actual Wilderness battlefields.
One major battle will be presented for spectators each day from the Wilderness Campaign of 1864.
The Wilderness holds an important place in the saga of the War Between the States. It marked the first time generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee met in battle.
The reenactment battlefield is hauntingly similar to Saunder’s Field — a large field, encircled by a thick line of woods. With reenactors charging out from the woods, thousands of infantry and 30 cannons, spectators will truly get a sense of the magnitude of these battles.
In addition to participants from all of the major reenacting organizations in the east, The Wilderness will be hosting more than 1.000 troops from Western states that are part of the North/South Alliance. , The North/South Alliance will also be combining battalions in order to create an historically correct regiment with troop strength of one that existed during the Civil War — something that has never been done in reenacting before.
