During the winter of 1863-1864, the Union Army of the PotOmac and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia faced each other across the Rapidan River.
The Union forces, under Maj. Gen. George G. Meade, were quartered near Culpeper Courthouse; the Confederates, commanded by Gen. Robert E. Lee, were camped around the Orange Courthouse.
The site of the May 18-19 reenactment is located adjacent to Clark’s Mountain, the Confederate observation post.
* The spring of 1864 opened the Civil War’s fourth year. On March 9, 1864, Lt. Gen. U.S. Grant was placed in command of all the Union armies. Lincoln intended to give him a free hand. Grant considered the military problem to be simple — the principal Confederate armies had to be destroyed, not in the cities or “strategic points’* but in the field.
* Public attention on both sides was always centered on the fighting in Virginia. The opposing capitals were no more than a hundred miles apart.
* On May 4, 1864, the machine began to roll. The Army of the Potomac crossed the Rapidan at Germ anna Ford and Ely’s Ford.
