* The first casualty of the Wilderness was 18 year-old'Charles Wilson, shot while withdrawing before the major fighting began at Saunders’ Field.

* Grant lost 17,666 killed and wounded, captured and missing. Lee lost 7,800 killed, Wounded, captured or missing.

Minority Participation In The Wilderness

Levi Miller, a slave from Rockbridge County, Va., nursed his owner John J. MacBride of the 5th Texas Infantry Regiment back to health after a near-fatal wounding at Wilderness. He received a full military pension from Virginia after the war.

* Burnside’s Texas Corps had two Brigades of Colored Troops: 1st Brigade and 2nd Brigade. These USCTs did not see any battle action, but acted as armed escorts for the wagon trains.

* Burnside’s IX Corps also contained a group of Indians who acted as sharpshooters. There is no documentation to show that the Confederate Army had any Indians fighting at the Wilderness.

* There is limited documentation but Ramseur’s North Carolinians captured several Indian sharpshooters carrying Ojibwalanguage Bibles. This tribe is from the area »of northern Wisconsin and northern Minnesota.
