Students from Carver-Piedmont Technical Education Center travelled to Virginia Beach to compete in the 1996 Virginia VICA Skills and Leadership Contests on May 4.
VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) holds these contests on local, district, state, national and international levels. Students participating in the state contests had to win a gold medal at the district level in order to compete.
The contests range from leadership events such as spelling, prepared speech, poster and bulletin board contests to skills contests such as electronics, welding, carpentry, cosmetology and automotives. The state level skills contests are sponsored by industry, and students competing must work according to industry standards to win. Skills contestants often compete for more than medals and ribbons. This year, over $200,000 dollars in prizes and scholarships were awarded to first, second and third place winners.
