The vicious fighting on May 5 had left both Ewell and Hill seriously undermanned, and a Union assault on Hill in the morning was inevitable. Hill was positioned on the Orange Plank Road and Lee set up his headquarters a mile away at Widow Tapp’s farm.
As he was conferring with Hill and Stuart at the farm a platoon of blue-clad skirmishers walked into the clearing from behind a stand of pines at the northeast corner, rifles at the ready. As surprised as the Confederates were, the Union soldiers faded back into the pines instead of opening fire or advancing to make the capture that would have changed the course of the war.
