About 25 people attended the Water and Sewer Authority's public hearing Monday night to' oppose a proposed $10 per month increase in rates from $21.50 per month to $31.50 per month for customers of the Sperryville sewer system.
Chairman Eugene Leggett explained that $2.75 of the increase was needed to pay the difference between what the current rate brings in and the operating costs of the system. Another $2.75, he explained is needed to service the debt for the surge tank that the state is requiring the WSA to have put in. That leaves $4.50 to cover part of the cost of depreciation for the plant.
