to talk about progress, and there have been some positive developments. Advances in the past four years include new regulations to protect air and water resources from pollution, continuing the ban on oil drilling in the Arctic Refuge, passage of the California Desert Protection Act, and the commitment of resources to clean up and preserve the Florida .Everglades. Clinton has also expanded the public's "right-to-know" about toxic releases and required industry to release information on toxic releases to the public.
But the single most iiftportant contribution of the Clinton White House to the environmental cause has been his perseverance in fighting off the forces within Congress intent on slashing environmental protection efforts along with the budget of the Environmental Protection Agency. We should hope that in his second term, Bill Clinton will have still greater success in enacting important legislative reforms, particularly to the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and Superfund. Perhaps we can even help give him a Democratic Cbngress to improve his chances. It's important to Rappahannock County.
