To remove the smaller, rope-like Varicose veins on the leg, Dr. Sommers uses a tool that looks like a crochet hook, which hooks the vein and pulls it out of the leg.
This procedure, called stab avulsion phlebectomy, is used in conjunction with the inversion technique. Incisions are not longer than 1.5-3 mm. The patient returns to his or her normal lifestyle one day after surgery, Dr. Sommers said.
Laurie Riley, a patient of Dr. Sommers, had previously been operated on with the old stripping procedure. With that surgery, a patient can not immediately return to work.
Mrs. Riley said she still has scars from the incisions and the staples in her leg.
“It was awful,” said Mrs. Riley, who had the old surgery performed in 1992. “I had to lay in bed for a while. I was almost afraid to get it done again.”
