her boyfriend Justin, and her best friend wrapped up a weekend of partying with a farewell visit to a bar which was known to turn a blind eye to under-age drinkers.
Kari and Justin had five drinks each; her girlfriend had three.
Kari's voice begins to quiver, as she talks about trying to decide who should drive. They headed home, with Kari behind the wheel of her father's red Nissan 300ZX.
She rills in details with a soft voice that everybody is suddenly riveted to: Justin is vomiting out the passenger window, but he still takes a moment to reach over and fasten Kari's seat belt. His belt, however, isn't fastened — he needs the room to lean out the window.
Kari misses the entrance ramp to the interstate, rides over the concrete barrier, sails 100 feet in the air, and lands upside down, with half the car hanging off an overpass.
She remembers nothing about the accident. She dangled unconscious in her seat belt until rescuers cut her out. Justin came out of the passenger window of the car and ended up 25 feet below the overpass. He died. Her friend emerged with minor injuries.
Kari needed 1,500 stitches, including those necessary to re-attach her ear to her face. There are large scars down one side of her face (though her hair mostly conceals them) and along both forearms.
Kari's pain swirls palpably around the auditorium at Rappahannock County High. She's breaking up as sh§ talks about the guilt she feels for Justin's death and its impact on Justin's mother.
