Sewer Rates
The frustration of customers of the Sperryville sewer system with rising rates is shared by the members of the Water and Sewer Authority.
As the customers learned at Thursday's hearing $5.50 of the proposed $10 per month increase is unavoidable. Half will close a $9,000 deficit in the operating budget, and half will go to repay the loan for the surge basin being added to the plant.
The debate was over the additional $4.50 to be saved for future major expenses the plant. For two years in a row accountants auditing WSA books have suggested the WSA set rates to bring in $58,000 per year for depreciation of the plant. The $4.50 additional would only bring in about $21,300.
Unfortunately more than half the life expectancy for most of the major components of the plant has passed.
In spite of the pleas of those in attendance at the public hearing that the WSA wait longer to start saving for the future, that would not be wise. It will only cost the sewer system customers more money in the long rim.
