Hunter Barnes, architectural consultant for the Virginia Department of Education said smaller schools with fewer than 500 students are less efficient in use of their rooms than larger schools with’ 1,500 to 2,000 students. Block scheduling does require more classroom space, Barnes added.
Gangel said the state doesn’t want to admit the changes in curriculum, due the SOL requirements, would require more classrooms because they would then have to provide funding, which in this county would go for additional capital expenses to build the necessary rooms.
