On Jan. 23, Grace Yocum celebrated her 100th Birthday when family and friends threw her a party at Overlook Nursing Home in Warrenton.
Born Grace Raymond in 1898 near Boston, Mass., Yocum grew up in the New England area and attended Mt. Holyoake College. She studied languages (primarily French and Spanish) and transferred to the University of Wisconsin where she finished her degree. (She later traveled and studied in Europe.)
She met and married Lynn Oak and they lived in Oklahoma. Oak’s business took them to England and France. ]
In 1939, while they were living in Paris and just before the German occupation of that city, Oak died suddenly.
Grace Oak was lucky to catch one of the last passenger ships sailing for the United States before the war became full-blown.
She found a job in New York City and worked there
