FORGIVENESS It is never more evident that forgiveness frees the forgiver more than the forgiven as when we forgive the dead. Just as we may neglect to express our love to the deserving, we also often fail to forgive, putting us in a precarious state when the people we wish to forgive are no longer among us. Then, our subverted desire to forgive binds us up in guilt which, in turn, prevents us from loving fully and freely. As Rebecca Beard once wrote, “If we are to love others as we love ourselves, then we must learn to love the little self which so often needs to be forgiven for doing the things we do not want to do and saying the things we do not want to say.” It’s an old saying that anger burns most the hand that holds it even when we imagine that anger at another will somehow free ourselves. In fact, it is in the letting go of the “hot rock” of anger that our hand heals and our heart becomes free.
