In a democratic society we strive for equality f6r all citizens. Unfortunately democracy leads to the “least common denominator” syndrome. Does this mean that a base-line (read “quality public education as the least common denominator) is unsuitable?
Well, that depends on what the least common denominator is, doesn’t it? If it is lower than we find acceptable we have options: get involved and improve the situation through personal contributions of time and effort. If that doesn’t suit you, you can allocate your own resources to fund the private alternative of your own choice. Do not expect your fellow citizens to provide and fund for you a smorgasbord of improved opportunities!!
If we are willing to give up our goal of quality education for everyone regardless of assets, for surely this goal will be defeated by the tuition tax credit, then we should also look to providing relief for landowners in general and get the government out of education entirely! I do not believe that we can have it both ways!
