Reynolds said her pregnancy and delivery were normal. Her son William was bom on his due date, weighed eight pounds two ounces and had an “AP” of eight and nine. He aid not suck and swallow as her other children did, but when she asked a pediatrician about the infant’s behavior, she was told he was overweight. He died at 10 weeks on Feb. 5.
Recent studies link SIDS to nighttime breathing disorders and suggest that there is a family connection between sleep apnea (a condition where a person repeatedly stops breathing for at least 10 seconds at a time) and SIDS. Three distinct risk factors seem to be different physical characteristics of the skull, diminished response to oxygen deprivation and a tendency to respiratory disease and allergy, ail which tend to run in families.
