to tourney
Eleven members of Rappahannock County High’s public speaking team traveled on Jan. 16 and 17 to a mqjor tournament in Lynchburg. Tbumey hosts were E.C. Glass and Heritage high schools. More than 200 students from 21 schools participated.
Three RCHS students qualified for finals, where each earned honors. They were: Sophomore Ian Blubaugh, who placed sixth in humorous poetry; junior Emily Taylor, fourth in humorous poetry; and senior Andrew Van Horn, fourth in impromptu. Tb qualify for the final round, participants had to place in the top six in their respective categories.
Eight other Rappahannock students competed — each in four or five preliminary rounds. They were: Margo Haynes, serious poetry; Chad Heddleston, storytelling; Mike Letsen, original oratory; Courtney Mauro, duo interpretation; Abe McLear, impromptu; Adam Rogers, storytelling; Emily Sims, impromptu; and Jennifer Thomas, original oratory.
Serving as judges for the tournament and traveling with the team were: James Blubaugh, Maggie Rogers and team coach Jon Heddleston. Rappahannock hosts the Bull Rim District meet on Feb. 19.
