I am a current subscriber to the Rappahannock News and have lived here in Virginia for about half a Century. I have friends and relatives in several surrounding counties and have read many of their newspapers. Contrary to the comments in Mr. James P. Gannon’s letter, it is my opinion that the Rappahannock News does give its citizens a newspaper equal to or better than many other small communities. I am an elderly senior citizen with no training skills or direction in newspaper reporting, but I get annoyed when an individual’s writing is disrespectful to a profession he lays claim to.
What other newspaper would print a letter of severe criticism that was so harsh and self-centered? It took a gracious and fair minded editor, to perform such a noble act, and it was done without hesitation or reservation. Three hurrahs for the editor, RAH! RAH! RAH!!
Many newspapers country wide would have probably given it the deep-six treatment, and just passed it on to staff writers for evaluating future writings. Yes, criticism is a great tool and Mr. Gannon had every right to be critical, and write you the letter. We all learn and are made better by it, but the manner in which criticisms are made,
Withdrawing
The Fauquier County Bar Association, at its meeting on Jan. 15, voted to endorse E. William Chapman of Loudoun County to serve as the next judge of the Twentieth Judicial Circuit of Virginia.
I understand that, in endorsing Mr. Chapman, the Fauquier Bar properly considered the fact that this new position was recommended by the Judicial Council largely in response to a plea for assistance due to rapidly rising population and case load projections for Loudoun County.
Accordingly, the Fauquier Bar, while finding that I am qualified to fill this vacancy, decided that the new judge will sit frequently in Loudoun County and elected to endorse Mr. Chapman, who is the nominee of the Loudoun Bar. Significantly, the Fauquier Bar took this position notwithstanding the candidacy of two qualified member of its Bar. Mr. Chapman, in my opinion, has excellent credentials to serve as a judge of the Twentieth Judicial circuit.
After some reflection, and specifically after considering the foregoing, I have decided to withdraw my candidacy to fill this vacancy.
