It was democracy in action at the Sperryville Gateway Committee meeting on Sept. 17. About 20 residents revised the questionnaire that will be used in a countywide survey and then requested a vote on whether to accept the proposed changes.
At the meeting, committee member Buck Payne read the cover letter and questionnaire drafted at a Sept. 10 meeting. Minor changes were made in the cover letter, but the questionnaire elicited much more discussion.
Payne said that the questionnaire was written so as to be unbiased, easy to answer and must be limited to one page.
At Elizabeth Harris’ suggestion, Payne said he would try to increase the size of the lettering.
After changes were proposed to the question, “Do you own a business in Sperryville?” some in the audience said that they preferred the original wording. They asked for the matter to be decided by a vote. Surprising those who had worked at length to change it, the vote for the original wording won. The committee accepted the group's
