Deputies Jeff Peyton and Connie Compton of the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office were presented with the Buckle Up America Champion Award from the ABC Campaign (Air Bag Safety, Buckle Up Everyone, Children In Back).
The campaign was run nationwide during the Memorial Day week and Compton and Peyton together had 76 percent of the violations that occurred in the county during that time for seat belts and child safety seats. Capt. Chris Williams presented Compton and Peyton with the award and said the sheriff’s office will continue to participate in programs such as ABC and the Smart, Safe and Sober Campaign to promote highway safety.
In other sheriff’s office matters: The sheriff’s office arrested Edward Garfield Burke III of Stanley on Sept. 3 and charged him with manufacture of marijuana with intent to distribute and distribution of marijuana to a minor, both felonys. A juvenile was also charged in the incident. The investigation is still underway. Charges will be brought before the Grand Jury in November.
