On September 20, 1988, the first Virginia Lottery tickets went on sale across the state.
Lines began forming well before midnight. Virginians were ready to scratch. Officials estimated that a print run of 40 million tickets would satisfy Virginians for six weeks, until the second game was unveiled. Urgent calls to the ticket printer in Georgia moved the schedule forward for the second game - Money Match - to be introduced, when Match 3 sold out within half that time!
Billy’s Restaurant in Gretna was the first retailer to receive a license to sell Virginia Lottery products in August 1988. Since then, the Lottery has grown by leaps and bounds, with more than 5,200 licensed retailers in 1998.
