There’s a first for everything. Max Hawkins is glad he and his family could be an example!
The Virginia Lottery had been around for just over three years in October, 1991, when Hawkins, an electronics technician for the Virginia Department of Transportation, became the first state employee to win a Lotto jackpot.
Mr. Hawkins bought an easy pick ticket while Saturday grocery shopping at Three Chopt Market in Richmond. The next morning, Hawkins was reading the paper before he and his wife left for church. “My wife had bought a ticket, too, which was sort of unusual, and she asked if I’d checked the lottery,” he said. “I read the numbers out loud to her and she tore her ticket up. I figured while I had the paper out I’d check mine. I thought I only had three numbers and then I realized that I had all six! I didn’t even have any idea how big the jackpot was!” As it turned out, that jackpot was $2.8 million and Hawkins held one of two winning tickets. His prize was worth over
