During Colonial times, black bears ranged over nearly all of what is now the continental United States and Canada and even south into north-central Mexico. It is still the most common and widespread species of bear in North America. In Virginia, bears were plentiful and were found in all regions of the state. Today, most occupied bear habitat is in the mountainous counties and in the Great Dismal Swamp Refuge.
